Participatory Design Workshop

We held a participatory design workshop to define requirements for a visual and interactive system to explore social networks. We worked with historians, sociologists and computer scientists. Objectives are to generate ideas, show how you would see that in a software, work together, discuss and have fun.

Our workshop was organised in 4 stages:

  1. A presentation of novel visual systems and interaction techniques for graphs and social networks.
The aim is to inform social science researchers about research-leading tools (trying not to guide them towards a special technique) and initiate creativity. The outline of our presentation can be found here .
  2. A brainstorming where everyone generate as many ideas as possible.
We focused the brainstorming on 2 questions: how would you like to explore your network? how would you like to create and edit your network?
  3. A video prototyping where a couple of ideas are recorded.
By small groups, people discuss and create their prototypes using pen and papers. Then, they film their ideas, showing interaction and commenting their ideas.
  4. A final stage where movies are shown to everyone following by a discussion before closing the workshop.
