Why Computerizing 2D Animation |
|
Several reasons:
- High financial stakes
- Technology is mature
- Studios ask for it
- Interesting HCI problems
- I know the domain
- Opportunity with the European "Computer Cartoon" project.
Since the 80's, computer-aided 2D animation has not evolved. Problems
are not only technical:
- Scale
- Number of drawings (tens of thousands for a series)
- Organization
- Very strict and rigorous workflow
- Structural
- Taking into account hidden costs and structural modifications
induced by computerization.
- Psychologic and Social
- Taking into account the artistic nature of a large part of
the animation.
